Ex, the Pavey story is a very nice one, but as you know, this event is nothing more than a load of self-indulgent old guff.

I mean, Phil Taylor was in the running the other year, for being good at a pub game in which you improve the more beer you drink.

Ah yes beg your pardon, but you know the point I'm getting at. Hamilton has had far more media exposure in the past few months and probably consistently throughout the year as well.

Eerie, not usually.

But I'm pleased that Jo Pavey got third place.

I think there's more than enough back-slapping of the 'lesser known' sports at this event nowadays, Scorch.

Positively riddled with it, in fact.

Seriously though, apart from being good to wind Pagey up, does anyone really give a Fuck about this non event?

Apart from the sort of people who frequent Disneyworld, who like watching a load of sentimental bollocks to make them feel God about themselves, obviously...

That's strange. Could have sworn I watched exclusive live coverage of The Open from Royal Liverpool on BBC Television. Must have been dreaming.

I enjoy it still but they should have more race horses in the studio (ala Red Rum)

Re: Sports personality
I think it's partly to do with the fact that the F1 has been on BBC for nine months and has had much more publicity. Hamilton has been featured in the media a lot this year- particularly at the climax of the season. McIlroy's wins were some months ago and were only broadcast live on Sky, meaning many fewer people would have watched it- which definitely has an effect.

Personally I'd like big name sportspeople to not be eligible- would be lovely if the blind Skier or Liz Yarnold won. It's a nice honour for someone like Hamilton or McIlroy, but it would mean the world to one of the 'lesser known' nominees.

Then again you can't exclude people just because they are in the public eye more, or are far better compensated for their careers, and I expect no-one would watch if it were between 10 people 80% of the population have never heard of. Let's face it, there were probably only 4 people on the list most of the general public would recognise.

It's gone way down hill since they put it in a huge venue in my opinion. BBC trying to get some revenue to pay their over rated over paid presenters.

"None of the media are saying that it might have had something to do with him declaring he's going to represent Eire at the next Olympics"

Personally, I think that has a lot to do with it & presumably the media are a little bit wary of raising it for some reason? Too politically sensitive I suppose for the BBC ?

It’s actually for that reason that I could & never would vote for the Mcllroy , even if he won all 4 majors next year & started to walk on water.

Yes, I know he has a British Passport & yes, I know that McGuigan won but the SPOTY, but the latter was before the public vote . Again, I totally agree that the public should decide rather than a few bigwigs deciding who’s actually worthy enough to win it, even if I sometimes don’t agree with the winner, like Giggs from a few years back.

I know that it doesn’t state British Sports Personality of the Year in the title , but you’d have to be thick to realise that’s what it actually is. 60 years ago no one would have thought it would ever mean anything else & obviously didn’t look in to the future to try & account for instant social media & internet forums with idiots trying to point score by dissecting every poxy single word in a literal sense as though it had been taken out of the bible. Same applies to the issue of people each year trying to dissect the meaning of “ Personality” being in the title rather than “Achievement”.

Going back to Mcllroy, not voting for him isn’t a punishment from my perspective & I genuinely respect & understand his decision to represent the Republic of Ireland, whatever his passport says. If that’s where his heart is then good luck to him & I’ll happily vote for him as Overseas SPOTY in the future. He’s a fantastic golfer & spoke & handled the result with good grace since & certainly better than those pair of knobs Poulter & Westwood after reading their comments.

Ive got an idea.

Why don't we leave it where it is and not continue with this pointless drivel any more?

Otherwise I will answer you back with the obvious, you will then respond with some truly pedantic bollocks and it will be like a game of prick tennis where nobody wins.

'By 'ripping up an international tournament' do you mean that he played well but England still flopped? Then he failed at every 'big' game since. I don't mean wanky pointless qualifiers, I mean the games where you need your best players to step up to the plate and produce when it really matters.'

So you'll take it back regarding Bale then, seeing as he's never even been to a tournament with Wales?

Cheers for the vindication.

Re: Sports personality
It lost any credibility it had about 4 years ago when Giggs won it over Ennis who had come back from a potentially career ending ankle injury meaning she had to change her take off and landing foot which would be like changing your primary hand, she then won the world championships shortly after but they still gave it to Giggs after letting the thick public vote and decide,.

Rooney's a great player but he's not world class. Never has been and never will be. He's about as good as we get in England, but not world class.

By 'ripping up an international tournament' do you mean that he played well but England still flopped? Then he failed at every 'big' game since. I don't mean wanky pointless qualifiers, I mean the games where you need your best players to step up to the plate and produce when it really matters.

Fair play to him for scoring 50 goals if and when he does but, in my opinion, the goals scored by those around him actually led to something like a World Cup win or a meaningful run in a competition or a World Cup Golden Boot.

We have differing opinions on him as a player yet you translate that into meaning that I don't think he's a great player, which he is. Just not world class and unreliable on the biggest stage in the main internationally.
